Els camins sagrats

The thematic area of this CAT covers the important ancient tradition of medieval pilgrimages, taking the village of Vilajuïga as a geographical reference because of its proximity to Sant Pere de Rodes, a historic medieval pilgrimage site and one of the starting points for the Way of Saint James in Catalonia, a route promoted by the Directorate General of Tourism of the Government of Catalonia.

Vilajuïga

Vilajuïga is in the county of Alt Empordà. The municipality covers 13.24km2, lies at 32m above sea level and has 1,200 inhabitants.

Its wonderful location right between two natural parks and in a natural landscape of national interest and its good communications with the rest of the county have made it into a very dynamic place.

Its mineral water and its wine have made a name for themselves.

Traditional access point for the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.

Inhabited since antiquity, it preserves a very notable group of megalithic tombs, four of which are at the summit of Coma d'Infern, while a fifth is on its lower slopes. There is the La Carena dolmen and those named Les Ruïnes, La Talaia, El Garrollar and, most importantly, La Vinya del Rei.

Apart from these megalithic remains, the Vilajuiga municipality was also inhabited in Iberian and Roman times, as shown by the remains found at Puig de Quermançó, La Roca Pujolar, Roca Miralles and Montperdut.

Quermançó Castle is a real symbol of Vilajuïga. It was an important defensive stronghold difficult to take by force because of its steep position.

The church of Sant Feliu de Vilajuïga ("Sancti Faelicis in Villa Judaica") is not documented until 1080.

The place name (Villa Judaica) quite clearly means "Jewish Town" or "Town of Jews". We must suppose that the foundation or repopulation of the place was the work of Jews.
